It seems that I am seeing more and more young people coming into my practice using Spice, K2, or legal Bud. These are street names for what is being marketed as Synthetic Marijuana. Many young people will turn to using synthetic marijuana thinking that they are not breaking the law, that they can avoid having a positive drug screening, and that this is not an addictive substance. Initially the effects of these substances are similar, yet not quite the same as marijuana. However, the side effects are very dangerous and can be life threatening. I have directly witnessed side effects such as, seizures, nausea and vomiting, and disassociation. I have known kids to be hospitalized for using this substance.
Please check out the links and include discussing this dangerous substance in conversations with your teens and children. It is misleading that it is advertised as a legal alternative...and could lead to one making the decision to experiment with this substance because "if it is legal, it must be safe." We all need to be informed consumers and parents these days! I hope that this is helpful!!!
